How to Test Microphone Audio on a Windows or Mac Computer

Here’s a way to make a test recording in your computer to see if it’s the softphone or voice dictation program not picking up the microphone or if the headset is not sending any microphone sounds to the computer at all.

Windows:

• In the search bar of Windows type Sound Recorder (Windows 7 and Windows 11) or Voice Recorder (Windows 10).
• With the headset on and in computer mode, press the record button and start talking to test microphone.
• Play the sound back to see if you can hear it.

MAC:

• Open up QuickTime.
• Under file select “New Audio Recording”.
• It may ask you to select your microphone. If it does, choose your headset.
• With the headset activated, record a few seconds of your voice to test the mic.
• Press play once finished to hear the sound come back to you.

If you can't find the Sound Recorder:

Sometimes the program will not be on the computer because it was removed or hidden by IT. In that case...You can use this nifty online voice recorder

If recording your voice with one of the above methods works, then the problem is somewhere in the settings of the softphone or voice dictation program. If it doesn’t, then the computer isn’t hearing the microphone at all, and we need to check the computer settings again.
