Windows 11 Not Recognizing Input Device

Updated by Kamika Royal on May 23, 2024

If you have a headset connected to a Windows 11 PC and are getting speaker audio but find your headset's microphone isn't being recognized under input, here are some things you should try.

  1. Disconnect the USB cord from the computer and plug it back in
  2. Move the USB cord into a different port (If going into a docking station try connecting it directly into the pc)
  3. Reboot the computer and check for any Windows Updates
  4. If the above fails, try this:
  • Right-click on the speaker in the bottom right corner of your screen and select "Sound settings"
  • Scroll down to the "Advanced" section and click on "more sound settings". This will open a window with 4 tabs at the top: Playback, Recording, Sounds, and Communication

  • Go to the recording tab, right-click on the headset and select "Set as Default Device".
  • If you do not see the headset listed right click on any device under the recording tab and ensure "Show disabled devices" is checked off
